Starting November 5, the Sikkim government will introduce an odd-even traffic regulation in the Gangtok municipal area to alleviate congestion. Under this system, odd-numbered vehicles will be allowed to operate on odd dates, while even-numbered vehicles can travel on even dates. The rule will be in effect from 9:30 AM to noon and again from 3:30 PM to 6 PM, with an exemption period from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM.
The regulation applies within Gangtok’s municipal limits, specifically along the National Highway between Mayfair Fatak and GICI, Zero Point, although it will not cover feeder roads. Emergency services, such as ambulances, police, and fire services, along with essential services and specific government and media vehicles, are exempt from these restrictions.
To further reduce traffic, the government has also announced revised school timings starting on the same day. All government schools will operate from 8 AM to 2:15 PM. For double-shift schools like Sichey SSS, CS Rai Arithang SS, and Bojoghari SSS, current schedules will remain unchanged. Private schools are required to start at 8 AM and conclude their sessions between 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM.
