On the morning of October 4, 2023, Sikkim experienced a major disaster as flash floods triggered by the bursting of Lhonak Lake wreaked havoc along the Teesta River. The deluge swept away 16 bridges, including six vital ones in Lachen Valley, and damaged approximately 20-25 kilometres of road network, cutting off strategic communication lines to the China border along Lachen Valley.

In response to the crisis, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) swiftly took action to restore crucial connectivity to North Sikkim. Braving adverse weather conditions, BRO, in coordination with the army, built several Bailey bridges over the Teesta River at Sanklang, Chungthang, and Zeema in the initial phases of the restoration effort. The most challenging task, however, was cutting through approximately five kilometers of hard rock terrain. Despite the obstacles, BRO successfully restored vehicular access to North Sikkim via the traditional route by April 8, 2024.

Unfortunately, the situation took a turn for the worse on May 29, 2024, when Cyclone Remal unleashed unprecedented rainfall in North Sikkim. Flash floods in the Lachen Chu River brought down heavy boulders and swift currents, sweeping away the recently constructed Bailey Bridge at Zeema and severely damaging under-construction Bailey Suspension Bridges. This once again severed the strategic lines of communication to the China border via Lachen Valley.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the courageous workers of BRO under Project Swastik acted quickly, commencing work on rebuilding the crucial Bailey Bridge at Zeema. Construction of the abutments began on August 24, 2024, and the bridge was completed in less than a month, demonstrating BRO’s unmatched efficiency and dedication.

The restoration of this vital bridge will not only support the logistical needs of the local population and armed forces stationed along the China border but also revive tourism in North Sikkim by reestablishing access to popular destinations like Gurudongmar Lake, which had been cut off since the previous year’s floods.

This successful project underscores BRO’s unwavering commitment to the people of Sikkim, exemplifying their motto of "service before self." Their tireless efforts to restore North Sikkim’s connectivity are a testament to their resolve in overcoming nature’s challenges.
